Dr Dan Plews

As a Sports Scientist (specialising in the area of Physiology) Dan has worked closely with athletes who have won more than 30 World and Olympic titles in the sports of rowing, kayak and triathlon. As a researcher, Dan completed his PhD in the area of applied heart rate variability (HRV). This work focused on implementing and validating methods regarding the application of HRV to track training adaptation in Elite athletes. Since then, Dan has gone onto having more than 70 peer-reviewed publications in the area of applied sports science and exercise physiology. Dan was the Head of Physical Performance for the Emirates Team New Zealand during the 2021 America’s Cup winning campaign (with coach Adam), and also leads Performance Physiology for Women’s Canoe Racing New Zealand. Before turning his hand to HYROX, Dan competed in Ironman Triathlon, and in 2018 he broke the amateur course record at the Ironman World Championships in Hawaii, Kona in a time of 8 hours and 24 minutes, and in 2023 at the age of 41, set an astonishing time of 7 hours and 56 minutes for the Ironman Triathlon distance. On HYROX debut, Dan set a time of 1 hour and 1 minute, stamping his ticket to the HYROX World Championships and winning his age-group by nearly 10 minutes. In his second HYROX race Dan set a new PR time in 58 minutes and 52 seconds for the open HYROX. more recently on pro-debut, he set a time of 1 hour 1 minute in Brisbane.

Adam’s specialist background in physical performance development has enabled him to work with multiple Olympic, World, and Commonwealth Champions across several sports including weightlifting, track and field, rugby union, sprint kayak, rowing, and sailing. As a Senior Research Fellow within AUT University's Sports Performance Research Institute, he has over 40 scientific publications in the areas of strength and power development, resistance training periodisation models and sport performance interventions for strength, power and endurance athletes. In addition to HYROX, Adam competes in half marathon to ultra marathon distance running events.
